Fivizzano

A Renaissance jewel

Fivizzano is an elegant and majestic town situated at an altitude of 326m above sea level between the Apennine Mountains and the Apuan Alps. It is also known as the “Florence of the Lunigiana”, because of its beautiful Renaissance architecture and the fact that it was one of the first towns to submit to Medici rule back in the 16th century.

Long before the Medici family ruled these lands prehistoric people already inhabited the area, which can be testified by the discovery of various Stele Statues in the surrounding area.

Verrucola Castle

Only 2 kilometres away from the historical center lies the famous Verrucola Castle. One of the most well-known castles in the entire Lunigiana, it dates back to the year 1104 and because of its strategic position it was often the location of power battles between potent families in the region.

For travellers on the Via del Volto Santo, Fivizzano is the end point of stage no. 2 if your departure point was the town of Pontremoli, although we recommend taking 3 days to cover the first two stages of this pilgrimage route because of the significant difference in altitude.
