How to get there

On foot

For centuries, Lunigiana has been a land of travellers, of merchants, of pilgrims. A transit area that even in modern times can be reached by a variety of pilgrimage routes adapted to modern-day wayfarers. The main ways to reach Lunigiana on foot are by following the Via Francigena or the Via del Volto Santo.

By bicycle

What counts for walkers, also counts for cyclists: the Lunigiana is a perfect place to be reached by bicycle if that is your preferred mode of transportation. Besides following the beforementioned Via Francigena or Via del Volto Santo trails, you can also follow the Eurovelo 5 route.

By car

European Route E33 connects the city of Parma in Emilia-Romagna to the coastal city of La Spezia in Liguria. This scenic highway crosses the Apennine mountain chain right into our beloved Lunigiana territory.
As an alternative to the E33 highway, it is also possible to follow the State Road 62 (Strada statale 62 della Cisa). Opposed to the E33 highway, no toll is charged on the State Road 62.

By train

Trenitalia operates several regional train connections that serve the Lunigiana territory. The most important connections are:

  • Between Parma and La Spezia
  • Between Parma and Genoa
  • Between Florence and Pontremoli

These are all regional trains, no high speed trains serve the Lunigiana. We advise you buy your tickets online on the Trenitalia website to avoid having to queue at the station of your departure.

By plane

There is no airport located in the Lunigiana itself, but several airports are located within a reasonable travel distance:
