Verrucola Castle

The castle

A visit to the gorgeous town of Fivizzano isn’t complete without venturing 2 kilometres away from the historical center. There, situated between the Mommio river and the Collegnago canal, you will be able to admire a very fine piece of medieval fortified architecture: the Verrucola Castle.

The castle is first mentioned in chronicles dating back to the year 1104, when it was in possession of the important Bosi family. Because of its strategic position along the road that connected Lunigiana to the cities of Modena and Reggio Emilia in the north, it has been subject of constant battles between noble families.

In the year 1481 a violent earthquake wreaked havoc in the surrounding area and contributed to the decay of the Verrucola Castle. Partially recovered and transformed into a monastery of Augustinian nuns in the 16th century, the castle went through a further, slow decline. In 1977 the castle was finally purchased by the sculptor Pietro Cascella, who restored it to its former splendour.

Visiting the castle

Verrucola Castle is currently owned and occupied by Iacopo Cascella, son of the beforementioned sculptor. It is however possible to visit the castle upon agreement with the owners. To organize your visit, you are invited to call +39 366 3832098.
